The parent committee manages the playgroup. Members are elected to the committee by the parents of the children who attend the playgroup. The elections take place at the Annual General Meeting, which is held in the Autumn Term each year. The Annual General Meeting is open to the parents of all of the children who attend the playgroup. It is their forum for looking back over the previous year’s activities and shaping the coming year’s activities.
The committee works on a completely voluntary basis. There must, at minimum, be a Chairperson, Treasurer and Secretary who are the “officers” of the Committee. All members are required by Ofsted to have police checks.
It is the responsibility of the Committee to ensure that the playgroup adheres to all new regulations and guidelines. They are also responsible for ensuring the financial security of the playgroup and organising fundraising events.
The above may sound daunting, but committee members receive excellent support from professional bodies such as the Preschool Learning Alliance and Swindon Sure Start Partnership as well as the playgroup staff. Being on the committee means that you have a chance to have your say and greatly contribute to the direction and running of the playgroup. It is a wonderful opportunity to experience the mechanics and team work of running a playgroup, to make new friends and to improve existing skills and/or to gain new skills. Organising successful fundraising events can be particularly rewarding especially when you get to see the fruits of your labour in the form of new and improved facilities for your children at the playgroup.
